The last day at CSW is much like dropping down a rabbit hole and meeting Alice in Wonderland. This year was no exception.
On Thursday they " negotiated " until 4am on Friday morning. Wisely I did not stay up late as nothing much happens the second last night except everyone getting tired and crabby.
So around 3 pm on Friday the negotiations were meant to start but did not. So I went and had supper with my friend from the Holy See. This was the only sane bit of conversation I heard the rest of the evening. We were meant to re-start the meeting at 7.30pm , however the chairman from the Philippines said a later time several times and this went on until about 11pm. There had been a lot of arm twisting in the room over that time.
Then a draft agreed conclusion on " Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the millennium development goals ( MDGs ) for women and girls was presented. However this document was not agreed. Two paragraphs were not agreed at all. You would think this high sounding document would measure some of these MDGs , but no. It is just a vehicle for the rich countries to ram their sick liberal ideology down the reluctant throats of the poorer countries.
We were given less than a minute to read this 24 page document. My speed reading was not quite up to the task. Then everyone thanked the Swiss facilitator for being such a great facilitator, they lied she was rubbish at the job. The agreed conclusions were not agreed at all.
So then there were 22 countries who made reservations . Some of these countries were speaking for 50 plus countries in their group. So around half the countries in the world were unhappy. The rich countries lamented a reference to " the family " as they wanted " various forms of the family". They were also upset that there was no reference to SOGI. In fact some NGOs were upset at security having confiscated their SOGI tee-shirts. For the un-initiated SOGI means sexual orientation / gender identity.
The poor countries complained about loosing their paragraph on national sovereignty. This is how they escape doing all the daft things the rich countries do.
The Egyptian lady delegate Ms Mervat Tallawy put on the best show of all. Her little tirade tickled the fancy of the radical feminists and gays. She said women were not autonomous , no retreat from Cairo or Beijing , wave of conservatism against women , not allow fundamentalist do to ... , all the women of the world struggle for their rights. If I were a Muslim from Egypt I would have died of shame. I met a woman NGO from Egypt at the CSW and she shares my feelings.
After all this farce came the resolution on , Women , the Girl Child and HIV and AIDS. The Netherlands ( on behalf of the EU ) introduced killer amendments at this stage. Malawi who sponsored the resolution on behalf of the Southern African Development Community called for a vote . The Netherlands wanted to delete "delay of sexual debut " from "...encourage responsible sexual behavior , including abstinence and fidelity , delay of sexual debut , .... " As AIDS is primarily a sexually transmitted infection , that leads to death , this was insanity. I am ashamed of being an EU citizen. Malawi complained that there was not 24 hour notice. The Chairman from the Philippines swept this aside and said everyone knew about the proposal. Then she tried to withdraw the resolution. Then the Chairman enforced the rules and said the resolution could not be withdrawn after voting commenced. So one rule is ignored , but another kept , just so the rich countries can get their way.
So this was about the most corrupt UN meeting I have been at in many a long year. The negotiations are meant to be by consensus and the agreed conclusion are mean to be agreed. How come half the countries of the world made reservations. There was obviously no consensus and no agreement. I was very happy to leave the mad hatters tea party at 2am Saturday morning.
I would like to share my experiences at the UN and around the world, concerning my pro-life work.

Family Watch International
Yesterday , I went to a great side event. This was sponsored by Qatar , Indonesia , Belarus and the Holy See. Sharon Slater organized this excellent event that was to promote a stand alone resolution for the Sustainable Development Goals.

An American at the UN
The week at the United Nations was one that I will never
forget. It was a week full of learning, growing and meeting people from across
the world. The week started with
listening to various countries give their opinion on women rights, a topic that
is very close to my heart. It was so
wonderful to hear people across the world come together to work and encourage
empowerment for women.
The
United Nations fails to realize that abortion does not empower women. It takes
away the most fundamental human right, the right to life. It was disheartening
to hear a group of people fight for equal pay, equal opportunity and education
for women and in the same speech speak of taking away the rights of the unborn.
Women are not empowered when we are taking away the rights of others, we do not
need to leave children without choices to have our own. Why are the children’s lives not being fought
for? They are being fought for, by Peter Smith and many others from all over
the world. It was so incredible to see Peter speaking to Muslim women, Catholic
Priests, Mormon leaders and many more. All of these people came here to fight
for life. It was a beautiful and unique opportunity to be so united with people
of so many backgrounds.
A
surprise that I learned was truly how political the UN is. There were so many
deals off to the side and nobody to hold these diplomats accountable. I quickly
became aware that the people of these countries had no idea what their
diplomats were speaking about and fighting for. Some at the United Nations see abortion
as a fundamental right. The powerful countries see abortion as a fundamental
right. It is the powerful countries that
are constantly bullying the poorer and smaller countries into their beliefs.
They seem completely closed to any dialogue that speaks about giving rights to
the unborn, as though it is a preposterous and obsolete thought.
Thankful
is the word that I would describe for SPUC and Peter Smith’s presence at the
United Nations. To know that life is being fought for and there are people that
are not going to give up is such a comforting thing to know. I am so thankful
to be a part of this experience, learning all that I did and meeting all the
people that I was fortunate enough to meet. I am proud to say that I was part
of the presence fighting for life, the fundamental right of all humans at the
United Nations.
Katherine Beck is a senior at the University of South
Florida in Tampa, Florida. She has been
volunteering at pregnancy centres since she was seventeen and her passion is
helping women and their unborn children. She volunteered at SPUC in London,
England and has also spent time in Washington, D.C interning for the pro-life
movement. After graduation Katherine
plans to work full time in the pro-life movement fighting for the civil rights
of the unborn as well as the rights of women.
CSW
Negotiations begin today at 10am New York time. Please pray for the pro-life/pro-family delegations to do a good job.

CSW
Well here I am in Conf room 2 for the second day of CSW. I am probably the only non-feminist here in the room.
There are a lot of speeches going on of dubious value.
The main document will be negotiated , on Thursday. This document is titled :
Challenges and achievements in the
implementation of the
Millennium Development Goals for women and
girls.
This document has 22 references to "reproductive " matters , "sexual" matters 43 times , sexual orientation twice and gender identity two times. There are 6 references to " diversity " which is a cover for LGBT issues.
Please pray that a reasonable document will emerge by the end of next week. .

Commission on Status of Women ( CSW )
Here we are at the CSW again. I have a student with me this week , Katherine Beck , please see opposite.
The document being negotiated over the next 2 weeks is about , " Challenges and Achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for Women and Children."
This is just a vehicle to promote abortion and anti-family things.
Please pray for us these next two weeks.
